The tragedy of September 11 opened the doors to a series of attacks directed at the Muslim community in the United States, with intensified reports of anti-Muslim hate crimes. However, the complaints of civil-rights related incidents of discrimination, harassment, and violence directed at Muslims in the country are seldom given attention in the U.S. media, as reported by CAIR.
“FLYING WHILE MUSLIM” is a story about men and women who have been subjected to detainment in airports and police stations, or accused as enemies of the state based on their perceived “Muslimness” or “Arabness”. It attempts to present different sides of the story so that the viewers could open themselves to the various arguments presented by the people concerned.
This program does not seek to reflect on how and why we assess and assign the burden of guilt. This program is not about September 11; it is merely serves as a backdrop. This program is about ordinary men and women – Arabs and Muslims but also American citizens – and the challenges they face in contemporary times with the threat and rhetoric of “terrorism” stitched in the fabric of society.
“FLYING WHILE MUSLIM” is currently on production and the early stages of editing. The documentary will be finished by Spring 2007.
